While some students get by without napping, others find that without a break, they get too sleepy in class and have to struggle to stay awake and keep up.
Napping is part of everyday life for many people, but some students find that it can interfere with their education.
“Napping in class is a common practice for many,” said Amie Broun, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. “Many, myself included, feel that we need to napping in order to get a better night’s sleep. I believe that the average student can napt for 10-15 minutes in the middle of the day, and it won’t affect their grades.”
Many colleges have nap rooms, and students can use them as a place to wind down between classes and free up time to get some more sleep.
“Although, a nap room can be helpful to many students, it is not always enough to compensate for a full day of class,” Broun said.
One student, a biology major at William and Mary, said she tries to take a nap at least once a week to ensure that she stays awake. She said that she can’t function without a nap, so she’s become accustomed to lying down for a few minutes during the school day.
“It’s really hard to be awake throughout the day,” she said. “I find I’m constantly hungry and I need a nap. I’m definitely not sure what my body does on purpose.”
Other students prefer to eat their midday meal while sitting in class, because they can use their lunch break to take a nap.
"I think I'm naturally a little more exhausted and need to take a nap every day," said Victoria Vergara, a graduate student at the University of Florida. "I always put my phone on airplane mode so I don't get any notifications and then I go to sleep and don't wake up until the second bell rings at the end of the class."
A student with a biology major at St. Lawrence University said that
